CATFact : History and the Plano Wildcats

By Mike Sigman

As the Wildcats embark on their 107th year of playing high school football one thinks of all the history they have made or they have been part of since they suited up for the first game in 1900.

Plano has been part of over 1100 games of which they have won close to 700. Plano has the honor of winning seven (7) state titles which ties them with Brownwood and Celina as having won the most championships in the State of Texas. Quite an honor when you consider there are over 1000 schools playing high school football in Texas. To put Plano in a class by themselves in this area, Plano is the only school to have won State Titles in four different classes. 2-A in 1965 and 1967, 3-A in 1971, 4-A in 1977, 5-A in 1986, 1987 and 1994. This is one record which perhaps may never be broken.

Along the way Plano has had three (3) undefeated teams: 1925, 1930 and 1987. They have also had seven (7) teams go undefeated through the regular season and ended with only one defeat suffered in the playoffs; 1961, 1974, 1975, 1982, 1983, 1984 and the great team from 2005.

Many outstanding players have donned the "maroon and white" of Plano. Pat Thomas who went on to Texas A&M and then the L.A. Rams where he was an All-Pro Defensive Back. Pat played in one Super Bowl game while with the Rams. Before the game a reporter asked Pat if this would be the biggest game he ever played in and Pat answered "No", he had played in a State Championship game in high school with the Plano Wildcats.

Another former Wildcat great is Billy Ray Smith who played on the 1977 State Championship Team as a defensive tackle. He was the best in the state. He went on to be an All American at Arkansas and spent many years as a linebacker for the San Diego Chargers in the NFL. He currently is a TV broadcaster.

The 2006 Wildcat team has a great heritage to draw from. This team can look back to a short year ago and draw from the strength of one of the top teams to ever play for Plano. With the season already under way this team has already displayed the winning spirit so many other Wildcat teams have displayed as they made history. The 2006 team has the look of history makers as they strive to add to the "History and the Plano Wildcats" legacy. [...]
